Greetings, Writer!

As a writer and an editor, there’s nothing more frustrating to me than seeing lists about how to be a better writer that don’t explain themselves.

They tell you what to do, but they don’t tell you why those things are useful or helpful, they don’t give you an idea of how to do those things, and they don’t give you suggestions for other things you can try if those don’t work.

So writers stumble around looking for help on HOW to show instead of tell and WHEN to do either, why adverbs are bad…or if they really are, and what to do when they’re told they have a one-dimensional character. But especially if you’re just getting started writing, you’re a busy mom, you’re a neurodiverse writer in a world programmed for the neurotypical, or you work a full-time job in addition to writing, you don’t have time to spend weeks trying to untangle how to put some of those tips into practice or figure out what advice is good and/or necessary and what’s just opinion.

This site exists to fill those gaps. I’m here to translate that advice for you, to help you make sense of the how and why and when of writing advice, complete with examples from books and movies/TV.

Pull up a chair and your favorite drink and snack and stay awhile! Or glance around and then come back when you have a minute—whatever works for you.

And I love questions, so if you would like to see something specific covered or expanded on, please email me from my contact page.

Merry Writing!
