Snow White and Rose Red

Genres

  • HISTORICAL FICTION – set in Mongolia under Genghis Khan and highlighting the position, influence, and freedoms of women at the time. ~ Arielle
  • DIESELPUNK – escaped Scandinavian prisoners of war, maybe? With German girls who take them in and then help them escape? Yes, please. ~ Arielle
  • URBAN FANTASY – in CANADA. I don’t know of many (or any?) UF books in Canada, but Toronto, Montreal, or Quebec would all be great settings for a UF series. ~ Arielle
  • EPIC FANTASY – Or, more accurately, ALL the fantasy! This is a tragically little known tale but GOODNESS, the potential here! I adored S.E. Page’s A Fair Account of the Traitors Snow White and Rose Red and NEED more retellings like that. I especially want some fantasy retellings that really explore the sisters’ relationship (because sisters are GREAT and we need more awesome sisterly relationships in fantasy). It’d also be fun to see some explanation of why the girls so easily befriend all the woodland animals. I just want big, richly magical retellings full of sisterly bonds and cursed princes and evil dwarves and basically all the amazing stuff this fairy tale presents us with. It is FULL of plot bunnies and can be twisted in so many different directions. So just give me ALL THE THINGS. ~ Christine Smith
  • PIRATE FANTASY – I keep going back to this one, but what if Snow White and Rose Red were pirate sisters sailing the seas and battling the evil dwarfish pirate??? While, of course, working on un-cursing the prince of the nearby land? Again SO MUCH POTENTIAL. ~ Christine Smith
  • MIDDLE-GRADE FANTASY – This story really reads like an MG story (it’s a much happier, tamer story than most fairy tales XD), and I’d love to see some humorous MG takes on it. ~ Christine Smith
  • URBAN FANTASY – Because a guy cursed as a bear, some hidden treasure, and two sisters who save the day just works for urban fantasy. ~ Christine Smith
  • STEAMPUNK – I don’t even know in what form or fashion. I just want a steampunk retelling for ALL the fairy tales. ~ Christine Smith
  • VICTORIAN FANTASY – For some reason I just feel like the events of this book would be really interesting in a Victorian setting. Maybe even a Gothic sort of vibe. Lots to play with here! ~ Christine Smith
  • PORTAL FANTASY (Narnia style!) – There are honestly a lot of Narnia vibes in this tale, and I think doing a Narnia-esque portal fantasy where these two young sisters stumble into a fantasy world where animals can talk would be delightful. ~ Christine Smith
  • Literally anything? Everything? ALL THE THINGS. The base plotline of this story leaves room for an infinite amount of potential and I would be thrilled to see it in all the things. Seriously, why is this fairy tale not more popular??? ~ Christine Smith
  • MEDIEVAL FANTASY.  Because of all the reasons – mainly dresses with floor-length sleeves. ~ Faith White
  • YA MODERN FANTASY. Two sisters in high school. A talking bear and an evil gnome. Humor and chaos ensue. ~ Faith White
  • GENDERBENT. Two brothers that are very close befriend a cursed princess living as a bear. This could be fun! ~ Faith White
  • FANTASY. Because there just isn’t enough retellings of this story in general, so I’d love to see some traditional fantasy takes on it, devilish dwarf, cursed bear, and all. ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • PIRATE FANTASY. Okay, yes. Now I’m obsessed with this idea, Christine. GOLD. (Pun not initially intended, but I’m leaving it there.) ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • GENDERBENT. I also want this. Typically, we get the girls turned into graceful creatures in fairytales (i.e. swans), but it’s high time we turned some princesses into bears. ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • STEAMPUNK/DIESELPUNK. There are just so many elements in this fairytale that SCREAM for a punked-up retelling. Bears and steampunk just work, OKAY? ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • REGENCY. Maybe non-magical, as a twist. Maybe magical. There’s just something about the two sisters that remind me of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet, and I’d be totally on board with a Pride and Prejudice/SWRR mash-up thing. Although, now that I’m thinking about it, it’d have to be magical so we could legitimately turn Mr. Darcy into a bear. THAT would be awesome. ~ Kirsten Fichter

Authors

  • MIRRIAM NEAL – she’s done a few paintings of this tale, and all are gorgeous. I’d love to see her retell it, maybe with a gothic twist? Southern gothic, even? She’s really good with those. ~ Arielle
  • BRITTANY FICHTER – a tale about sisters and bears and a dwarf and enchanted princes? She’d knock it out of the park, either in her Classical Kingdoms series or her contemporary. ~ Arielle
  • INTISAR KHANANI – especially in a desert-ish fantasy. I. Need. It. ~ Arielle
  • JESSICA DAY GEORGE – Because I think she would make such a fun, gorgeous retelling! ~ Christine Smith
  • GAIL CARSON LEVINE – Clearly we need the queen of middle-grade retellings to tackle this tale. NEED. ~ Christine Smith
  • SHANNON HALE – And yet another retelling queen that I am sure would do one spectacular adaptation! I would LOVE to see her make a retelling in much the same way as she wrote The Goose Girl. ~ Christine Smith
  • MARGARET ROGERSON – She writes such rich fantasy—I’d love to see what she’d do with this fairy tale! ~ Christine Smith
  • KATHERINE ARDEN – Her The Bear in the Nightingale, though not my favorite read, was a truly fascinating, gorgeously written tale. The way she wrote relationships and weaved in mythology so effortlessly into the world makes me think she could do one stunning Snow White and Rose Red retelling. ~ Christine Smith
  • JENELLE SCHMIDT – Her middle-grade story, An Echo of the Fae, not only featured sisterly bonds but such a magical world! I would LOVE to see what she did with this fairy tale! ~ Christine Smith
  • JOANNA RUTH MEYER – Just gimme ALL the retellings from her please and thank you! ~ Christine Smith
  • HEATHER DIXON – Another author I just want ALL the fairy tales from. ~ Christine Smith
  • GRACE MULLINS – I absolutely adored her novella, The Ghost of Briardale. It was such a fun, lighthearted, humorous retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I’d love to see her take on this fairy tale in the same vein! ~ Christine Smith
  • A.G. MARSHALL – Because OF COURSE we need her to retell this tale! ~ Christine Smith
  • HEATHER DIXON. Because we need more retellings from this author! ~ Faith White
  • GAIL CARSON LEVINE. We just need a million more fairy tale retellings from her. ~ Faith White
  • BRITTANY FICHTER. Jumping on this bandwagon, because we need this. ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • MADDIE MORROW. Her dark twist of Snow White for Rooglewood’s collection is FAB (although I’m NOT a vampire person AT ALL), and I think she could do the same amazing twists to SWRR. ~ Kirsten Fichter

Pre-Existing Story Worlds

  • Lea Doué’s FIRETHORN CHRONICLES – Wouldn’t this just be great set in her world of enchanted gardens, dark lords, and dragons that hide in your hair? ~ Arielle
  • Emma Savant’s GLIMMERS – I know, I keep saying this, but really. PORTLAND. Bears. Gardens. It’s PERFECT. ~ Arielle
  • THE TWO MONARCHIES SEQUENCE WORLD by W.R. Gingell – Mainly because I want basically every fairy tale retold in this series, but I also think Gingell would excel at putting her trademark humorous spin on this one, especially with the dwarf character! ~ Christine Smith
  • THE (FAIRLY) TRUE STORIES WORLD by Liesl Shurtliff – Shamefully I’ve only read one book in this series so far, but I LOVED it. It was just hilarious and so utterly whimsical. Honestly, Snow White and Rose Redfeels like the world in this series already, so I think it would be a perfect fit! ~ Christine Smith
  • THE PAPER CROWNS WORLD by Mirriam Neal – Because this gorgeous, whimsical world NEEDS more stories and this fairy tale seems like it’d be a wonderful one to put in there! ~ Christine Smith
  • Gail Carson Levine’s ENCHANTED world. ~ Faith White
  • JESSICA DAY GEORGE’S THE PRINCESSES OF WESTFALIN TRILOGY. Yes, we’re still very bitter that we didn’t get fairy tales for the rest of the twelve dancing princesses of the Midnight Ball, but seriously—SWRR is just a PERFECT fit for these gals since it’s a SISTER STORY. I would have taken full advantage of SWRR to focus on the twins, Poppy and Daisy, but since we already got Poppy’s story, I’d settle for any of the others. ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • GAIL CARSON LEVINE’S THE PRINCESS TALES. A short, comedic take on SWRR? Yes, please. Although, I’d also love a full-length novel set in Ella Enchanted. Maybe shapeshifting into a bear was Lucinda’s gift to a prince, and he’s had just about enough of getting shot at. ~ Kirsten Fichter

Movies / TV

  • A contemporary fantasy K-drama with Park Shin Hye and Ha Yeon Soo as the two female leads opposite Kang Ha Neul and SHINEE’s Onew. ~ Arielle
  • I am truly grieved Disney didn’t pick this one up back in the day and make it a classic, because, honestly, it feels like a Disney classic. (Plus it’s not nearly as, erm, gory as so many others, so they wouldn’t have had to tame it down as much. XD) How I ache for a good ol’ classically animated version of this tale. But hey, if they wanted to take it on now and do a sort of Tangled-style take on it, I would most CERTAINLY not complain! ~ Christine Smith
  • I think a live-action Disney film in a more aesthetically pleasing and eerie style like Maleficent would also work so, so well. ~ Christine Smith
  • I also think it’d make a great Studio Ghibli film. The idea of the sisters and their mom living in a peaceful forest and just enjoying their life there with nature and the woodland creatures is literally so, so Ghibli-ish. The mere imagery of the fairy tale SCREAMS Ghibli. (Honestly, My Neighbor Totoro practically has some Snow White and Rose Red vibes already.) ~ Christine Smith
  • A gorgeous fantasy film—like La Belle et La Bete (2014). Also a sweet Studio Ghibli film would be delightful! And I want to see the K-drama Arielle casted! ~ Faith White
  • ANIMATED FILM. A gorgeous Disney animated film of this would be FANTASTIC. Disney doing a SWRR adaptation is LONG overdue. But, ya know, if Mattel wanted to relive the glory days of their fairy tale films, I wouldn’t be opposed to a retelling with Barbie, since their 12DP, Nutcracker, Rapunzel, and Swan Lake stories are so much fun. Don’t judge me; they’re good films, and I have an almost three-year-old daughter who’s obsessed with her princess movies. ~ Kirsten Fichter
  • LIVE ACTION. I doubt the day will come when we won’t ask for a live-action film retelling similar to Maleficent, Mirror Mirror, Jack the Giant Killer, etc. etc. SWRR is just a beautiful fairy tale that deserves more love. I’m really surprised it doesn’t have a bigger fan base, or that more companies haven’t snatched it up to retell. ~ Kirsten Fichter

MERRY WRITING!
